It happened last night returning home from work. Not entirely sure what happened, but I lost control of the car when it tried to fishtail and I tried to correct it; the car fishtailed worst as I over corrected it. It did a 180 spin and landed in a ditch; the force of the impact apparently turned the engine off.

Kinja'd!!!

Despite the engine off, the air was still on (blowing cold air, oddly). Took me a bit to realize that the engine was off, and I had to Turn the car off then on again.

Kinja'd!!!

The impact also messed up the drivers side front tire, as it keeps losing air fast. I filled it up to 32 psi, and after help came it was down to 17 psi. Best case scenario, the tire popped off the rim.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

In the end, I’m ok. I have two other cars at the house that I can drive instead, which I’m extremely thankful for. It’s just a bummer that this was needs to be sent to a shop.

Glad you’re ok.

black ice perhaps?

oh well, could be a LOT worse though, least there weren’t any trees in your path.

Ever do much drifting/handling practice in a snowy parking lot? It can help your reactions in situations like this as far as overcorrecting. It’s good that you are okay though. If you hit the front wheel that bad, you might want to get the alignment checked when you get a chance.

Judging by the pictures, it looks like you spun out in the best possible place to do it. Glad you’re alright, and hopefully the car turns out to be fine as well.

Glad you’re OK. A slightly bent aluminum wheel can usually be pulled back into shape by a wheel shop for around $100. If it is still holding air at all, it is more than likely repairable. I had one recently that wasn’t but that one was so obviously bent you couldn’t even seat the bead at all.

Glad you are ok. My mom had this happen to her years ago, but she hit the only street sign for a quarter mile in either direction. I’ve had a couple of unintended spins, but both were attributable to rain and a need for new tires.

Hit black ice once on the freeway with the Corvette while doing 100kph or so... it’s NOT fun. Fuck black ice! Glad you’re ok and car looks fine too, it will be back on the road in no time :)

That sucks, sorry to hear.

Good to hear that you’re not injured though.

Glad you’re okay!!!! :D

Some cars will shut down their engines if they determine something like a crash has occurred.

I’ve also heard of engines stalling after/during a crash too. In both cases, electrical power will still keep running to everything, but no benefits of a running engine (heat from the vents).

Sucks, dude. Glad you’re ok. Often times the most important part isn’t knowing when to apply oppo, it’s knowing when to stop applying oppo so you don’t go spinning the other way. I’ve learned that one the hard way too.

It doesn’t look to have damaged the body any, so if that’s the case the worst you have to worry about is a new tire and wheel. So that’s pretty good!

Glad to hear you’re all right. That sort of ice incident claimed my Mom’s minivan back in 2005, her minivan fishtailed and then careened into a telephone pole. Van was totaled but no one was hurt. My brother also hit ice like that in 2008, at fairly low speed...slid off the road and hit a double-parked car (accident was a no-fault because the guy was double-parked). That was in my beloved Celica...instead of letting the insurance total it we took it home, pulled a passenger-side door off a junkyard car, and paid a shop to pull out the doorsill and hang the door. Ran fine for another seven years...

The engine probably stalled cause you were were going backwards while the car was still in drive?

maybe tire malfunction? to low on air due to cold? those things are tanks in the snow so I’m pretty surprised by this. I’m also happy to hear your not dead or injured!

You are correct, there is a fuel pump shutoff when it senses an impact, helps to keep from spraying fuel if a line was ruptured in an impact. No fuel, no engine running.

Malls after hours are great for this. Used to frequent the mall in Fairborn OH after a snow and after they closed down. Turn off traction and stability control, and go nuts. Or rather sno-nuts.

Cheaper just to pick one up at a junkyard, $16 for an aluminum wheel at my local u-pull-it, assuming they’re stock wheels. Or if you can find a whole set, it’d still be cheaper.

Good point. I sort of forgot that my car wheels are from a ‘14-16 model and harder to find in a junkyard (I still ended up getting a used one off of a wreck for around the same as the repair would’ve been.) The wheels in the photos appear to be stock Grand Prix wheels.

Muslim guy i worked for once slipped and fell on some ice, got up, realized his phone and wallet we’re no longer in his pockets and says “must have been black ice.” Sometimes minorities are surprisingly racist themselves.

Why don’t we just call that an off rather than a crash. Rally drivers have a whole bag of tricks to make you feel better about doing something stupid.. you’re good.

Sometimes? Yes, everyone can be racist... On the other hand, did he instinctively check for his valuables and before processing he fell because he couldn’t see the ice? Not everything is racist.

I heard that too, from a friend at work who had to tease me about my winter accidents (in 4 years, I’ve had 4 accidents). I’m thinking the engine did shut done on purpose.

The alignment will be checked out, it was also a main concern of mine. I can practice drifting somewhere, probably.

Should of been around 36 to 38 psi for that exact tire. I have two tires that keep going low, so I routinely check them all and fill them up.

Mine were on the back of my truck. Well, they ALL needed to be replaced, but both times it happened, the back end cut loose and came around. The first time was straight-up hydroplaning and it happened on a straight road . The second time I was turning left and goosed it a little too much. :)

Glad you’re ok!!! I backed my Accent into a guardrail at 50kph the other year after hitting some black ice and spinning 180 degrees into it with the back-right corner, so I feel your pain. Some body damage, but surprisingly only $1300 worth, the car drove fine and there was mechanical damage at all.

Was still an expensive lesson though! :(

Looks like your ride was lucky though! :)
